Bathroom renovations before and after

How do you choose a bathroom renovation specialist, what should you do before and after employing someone? These are a couple of great questions to consider.

The very first thing you need to do is decide on what you want, get a good plan in your head, or better yet on paper on what you want and need in your bathroom. This can take weeks or months and shouldn’t be hurried. You can get many ideas off the internet so spend time researching and figuring out exactly what you want your bathroom to be. Think of all the bathrooms you have used, especially if you have travelled, what did you like? What did you not like? What did you see that was practical and useful? What looked really good and what didn’t. Enjoy this time and don’t rush it. A great start is to keep major elements where they are. Once you have what you want, you need to look at who can provide it for you. Talk to people who have had their bathroom renovated or newly built and ask questions. Who did they use? Who do they recommend? What would they do differently next time etc. The last thing you want to do is end up on a programme like Cowboy Builders.

Next research yourself, so you know what’s what and who’s who. Shop around and talk to people in the shops. If you know what your specialist is talking about you are more likely to get what you want and less likely to be caught out or ripped off. This way too you are more likely to come out within budget. Check references, ring them and talk to them, if they let you, go and look at the work they had done and see for yourself the quality of the job. Make sure everything is in writing, signed and sealed, so to speak. Don’t make deals or get estimates and quotes by mouth have it written down and signed. That way if it goes wrong there is no “he said, she said” scenario. Check on their insurance, what happens if something goes wrong? Even ring their insurance company and ask where they stand. Be aware of paying upfront, never pay the full amount before the work is done. Agree on an amount. Read and study the contract to you know where you stand. Be aware of any fine print. Don’t sign off till you are satisfied. It sounds like a lot of work and stress, be prepared for this, rarely does anything go quickly and according to plan. Once you are satisfied and know what you need to know, just start.
